I was reading another transportation doomsayer newsletter and it hit me.
These articles aren’t about the industry.
They’re selling us something.
It’s fear.
Fear that technology is taking over. Fear of a transportation industry you don’t recognize.
Or worse, fear of a future you don’t have a place in.
Fear is definitely doing brisk business lately.
You can’t turn on the computer without some transportation Nostradamus
telling us about the dark horrors that await us in this unrecognizable logistics world.
Even as you look up and see the clear blue sky – enough articles and blogs and sites scream at you that the sky is falling – well, you start to think, “hey, it just might be falling.”
That’s the problem. What it’s doing to our industry.
Some logistics long-timers are doubling-down on the old ways.
Digging in and making their case for the way things have always been done.
Others are rushing around, searching under each and every digital nugget in
the hopes of finding the Next Big Thing.
Some are staking out a claim in one direction or another.
Tying their hopes to this answer or that solution.
But honestly, a lot of industry folks seem completely paralyzed by it all.
And that leads me to a solution.
Really take hold of all that uneasiness and don’t let go.
Wallow in the anxiety. Truly own the complexities you face…
Embrace the uncertainty!
Nothing crystalizes your messy thoughts and fuzzy directions like panic.
By embracing our fears of the future… you gain a supernatural clarity.
To see that maybe those old logistics folks do know what they’re talking about.
That serving our clients’ needs is actually important. Creating partnerships and
empowering people are not things to be discarded.
A clear-eyed look that maybe these tech innovators are on to something…
That maybe there’s real value to going digital so we can all come together and
make smarter decisions. We can take advantage of this incredible transformation
and get the best out of our supply chains.
Or just maybe, the clarity leads you to understand a simple truth:
Change is inevitable but we don’t have to sacrifice the things that made our industry great.
So I say, embrace the uncertainty, my fellow transportation professionals!
And reap the courage to boldly move onward.
